Violence is an issue of public health. It is an epidemic in our nation, and it is preventable. Catholic Health Initiatives is committed to creating and promoting a culture of non-violence as an essential element of healthy communities and a healthier society. CHI formalized this commitment to violence prevention by establishing it as a strategic priority with the goal of achieving system-wide violence reduction by 2020.
In CHI facilities throughout North Dakota, violence prevention efforts began as a community planning and coalition building process that engaged individuals and organizational stakeholders in developing a plan to prevent violence. Working together, communities identified intimate partner violence as a priority and developed a plan to address it locally. With a shared purpose of creating communities free from intimate partner violence, the CHI ND Violence Prevention Program was formed.
The CHI ND Violence Prevention Program’s goal is to reduce intimate partner violence in the communities we serve. This will be achieved using a multi-faceted approach.

- Training professionals to incorporate intimate partner violence prevention and intervention into their existing work

The Center for Disease Control reports that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner at some point in their lifetime. Locally, North Dakota communities have seen a rise in the number of intimate partner violence incidents in recent years. Intimate partner violence is an epidemic affecting people, families, communities, and society at large. The CHI ND Violence Prevention Program recognized this growing problem as an opportunity to enhance the way intimate partner violence is addressed within our communities.
Prevention Summit
The statewide summit is an opportunity to build professional networks while learning more about intimate partner violence and strategies to address it. A variety of educational presentations provide participants with information on the fundamentals of intimate partner violence, trauma-informed practice, and the integral role of professionals in preventing and ending intimate partner violence. Professionals working in healthcare, law enforcement, domestic violence advocacy, social services, counseling, education, faith-based organizations and interested community members are provided with applicable information and useful tools that can be incorporated into their professional settings and personal lives.
Community Outreach Leader Training
Providing training to program-identified Community Outreach Leaders is integral to ensuring best practices in intimate partner violence prevention and intervention are shared with professionals in a variety of fields. This statewide training equips Community Outreach Leaders with the tools and knowledge necessary to successfully hold trainings geared toward professionals within their own communities. Curriculum and materials are provided in partnership with Futures Without Violence.
Community Outreach
Local community outreach workshops are applicable to professionals in various fields. Workshops enhance knowledge on intimate partner violence, statistics, the impact of violence on health and wellness, best practices in screening, universal education, and referral. Training content was developed in partnership with Futures Without Violence and can be tailored to meet the needs of any audience. Community outreach workshops are free and available upon request. - Intimate Partner Violence: A Community Awareness & Outreach Workshop (for mixed audiences or those who do not provide direct care)
- Intimate Partner Violence: Universal Education & The Safety Card (for those in helping professions)
- Adolescent Relationship Abuse: Universal Education & The Safety Card (for helping professionals that work with youth)
- Connected Parents Connected Kids: Universal Education & The Safety Card (for helping professionals that work with families and parents)
- Workplaces Respond to Intimate Partner Violence (for all audiences and organizations)
Healthy Relationship Facilitator Training
The CHI ND Violence Prevention Program hosts/sponsors training for program-identified Healthy Relationship Facilitators. Facilitators participate in an intensive, experiential training that teaches the skills and knowledge necessary to share evidence-based healthy relationship curriculum with individuals in their respective communities.
Local Healthy Relationship Workshops
The program primarily uses Within My Reach a relationship skills and decision making program for individuals seeking more enriching relationships with the people that matter in their lives. Content promotes skill building in the areas of healthy relationships, decision-making, communication, conflict management and much more. Created for singles and those in relationships; it’s comprised of 15 units, each requiring about one hour of teaching time. Local Within My Reach workshops are participant-driven, interactive, and flexible in format. Within My Reach can be incorporated into existing programing and adapted to a variety of audiences. The program also offers ePREP and online, self-paced healthy relationship curriculum for those who are unable to attend in-person sessions. In addition, the program utilizes Safe Dates and other healthy relationship curriculums in select locations.
