Internal Medicine

Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases.

Physicians trained in internal medicine provide long-term, comprehensive care to older adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Internal medicine deals with common as well as complex or chronic illnesses, providing primary care through many stages of life. Internists diagnose and offer treatment cancer, infections and diseases affecting the heart, blood, kidneys, joints and the digestive, respiratory and vascular systems. They also offer care for eyes, ears, skin, nervous system, and mental health.

Internal medicine provides in-depth care for adult concerns, whereby in comparison, family medicine is a specialty in breadth aiming to provide initial, continuing and comprehensive care. When referral is needed, family medicine practitioners will often involve internal medicine specialists to provide more in-depth care for complex concerns.
