Providing Symptom Managment
Palliative care at CHI St. Alexius Health is a type of specialized medical care for people with serious or chronic illnesses such as cancer, ALS, MS, dementia, heart failure, emphysema, kidney failure and more. The palliative care team focuses on providing symptom management, relief of pain and the stress of a serious illness no matter what the diagnosis and to improve quality of life for patients and their families.
Our team of physicians, nurses, social workers and chaplains work with a patient’s other physicians to provide an extra layer of support.
Palliative care is appropriate for patients of all ages and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided alongside all other appropriate curative treatments. CHI St. Alexius Health offers palliative care on an inpatient basis, and also as outpatient care through the Supportive Care Clinic.
Although the goals of palliative care and hospice are similar, hospice is defined as care intended for patients with a six months or less prognosis. Palliative care is not limited by a defined period of time or qualifications. Patients can continue their treatment while still getting pain and symptom management as well as support.
